Fort Myers, Florida

Fort Myers is the county seat and commercial center of Lee County, Florida. The city was built in 1850 as a military fort to fend off Seminole Indians that were attacking and killing its settlers. By 1885, the city was incorporated and was the second largest city next to Tampa on Florida’s west coast.

According to 2008 estimates, the population of Fort Myers is 65,394. Along with Cape Coral, Fort Myers is known as the gateway to the Southwest Florida region which is a major tourist destination. In 2004, Fort Myers was hit by Hurricane Charley and sustained significant damage to many of its residential and business communities. In 2005, Naples and Fort Myers both suffered damage as a result of Hurricane Wilma. The city has since recovered and now holds itself out as a place that is a little quieter, a little less congested, a little less hurried and a lot less like the rest of the world. Fort Myers boasts that it has fascinating wildlife, pristine beaches and uninhabited islands to explore.

Fort Myers is currently the Spring Training home of the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox professional baseball teams and was the winter home of Thomas Edison.
