Hotel and Motel Negligence
Florida liability and personal injury lawyers specializing in prosecuting cases against hotels and motels for bed bug bites, slip and falls and negligent security cases throughout the State of Florida.
Bed bugs are bloodsucking insects. They reach hotel and motel guests by invading headboards, picture frames, ceilings, mattresses, couches and chairs. The bugs pierce the skin of human beings and extract blood to feed off of. In most cases, the bed bug bites cannot be felt until some hours or even days later.
Most bed bug bites consist of a raised red bump or flat welt, and are often accompanied by very intense itching. The red mark is the result of an allergic reaction to the anesthetic contained in the bed bug's saliva, which is inserted into the blood of its victim. Bites may not become immediately visible and can take up to nine (9) days to appear.
People react differently to bed bugs. Some commonly respond to bed bug infestations and their bites with anxiety, stress, and insomnia. Individuals may also develop skin infections and scars from scratching the bedbug bite locations. Bed bug bites can cause the following:
- Itching, welts, rashes, inflammation of the skin
- Evoke allergic responses.
- Scratching bites can lead to secondary infections
- Emotional distress and anxiety
- Loss of sleep (due to concern bed bugs are biting you)
- Property damage in discarding suitcases and clothes that have been exposed
Most patients are placed on corticosteroids to treat the itching and burning caused by the bed bug bites. Also, antihistamines have been found to reduce itching in some cases, but they do not affect the appearance and duration of the lesions.
If you encounter bed bugs in a hotel or motel room that you are staying at, inform the management of the facility immediately. Do your best to cooperate with management in allowing inspectors and exterminators access to the room. If you are staying at a hotel or motel, ask for a room change.
