The Citron Law Firms, P.A. is proud to be a sponsor of Ryan’s Heroes Walk/Run for the Histiocytosis Association of America.  The event will take place on May 3, 2008 in Hollywood, Florida.  Histiocytosis is a rare blood disease that is caused by an excess of white blood cells called histiocytes that cluster together and attack the body.  The vast majority of people diagnosed with histiocytosis are children under the age of 10.  The HAA is the only non-profit organization dedicated to providing support and education to patients and families dealing with histiocytic disorders in the United States.  The HAA also provides funding for numerous research grants in hopes of finding better treatment options and a cure for this rare blood disease.  For more information on Ryan’s Heroes Walk/Run and histiocytosis, please go to www.histio.org

On September 26, 2007, Howard Citron was a featured speaker for the American Health Lawyers Association during a nationwide teleconference regarding the use of electronic surveillance in healthcare facilities.  Mr. Citron focused his lecture on appellate and removal strategies in cases involving day-in-the-life videos as well as concerns over prejudice from the use of such videos in defending medical malpractice cases at trial.  Links to the materials presented during the seminar are featured below.

Howard Citron recently made new law when the Fourth District Court of Appeal affirmed summary judgment on behalf of his hospital/health system client.  Plaintiff suffered significant injuries after fainting in the emergency department after witnessing his patient wife receive medical care.  After complaining to hospital personnel that he felt ill, Plaintiff was instructed to leave the treatment area by his wife’s nurse.  When he left the room, Plaintiff passed out and fell to the floor.  Plaintiff suffered extensive injuries to his mouth, teeth and jaw and required mechanical ventilation to breathe.  Notwithstanding, the Court held that a hospital has no duty of care to a non-patient bystander for injuries sustained after fainting while observing a patient receiving treatment in the emergency department.
